IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN — So many Halloween TV specials these days are like getting a rock in your trick-or-treat bag, but 44 years after its first airing, this animated gem remains one of the best, as idealistic young Linus patiently sits in his “sincere” pumpkin patch waiting for the Santa-like Great Pumpkin to reward him with Halloween largesse. (8 p.m., ABC)

SCOOBY-DOO! CURSE OF THE LAKE MONSTER — Everyone’s favorite snack-lovin’, spook-shunnin’ Great Dane returns for a new adventure, in which the CGI-rendered Scooby-Doo (voice of Frank Welker) and his live-action buddies Daphne, Fred, Vilma and Shaggy (Kate Melton, Robbie Amell, Hayley Kiyoko and Nick Palatas) run into weird creatures while working at Daphne’s uncle’s country club. (8 p.m., Cartoon Network)

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES — At the Lockwood masquerade ball, Stefan and Damon (Paul Wesley and Somerhalder) hatch a new plan to deal with Katherine (Nina Dobrev), who invites an old friend, Lucy (guest star Natashia Williams), to attend the dance with her. (8 p.m., CW/Channel 11)

SCARED SHREKLESS — If you saw “Shrek the Halls,” you know the green ogre took his time getting in the Christmas spirit. That’s not the case with Halloween, though; he loves that holiday. In this new special, he challenges his fairy-tale friends to a scary storytelling contest, but there’s a catch: They all have to spend the night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted castle. (8 p.m., NBC)
